Building Implementation Committee update

UPDATE: April 10, 2010 - General Contractor is selected for the CENTER

The Autumn Ridge Church Building Implementation Committee (BIC) has been hard at work assembling the professional team to develop the final design of the CENTER at Autumn Ridge.  This facility addition will ultimately provide multi-purpose recreation space and an outdoor playground, new gathering and welcome space with support facilities, and multiple classrooms.

The full facility will likely cost slightly over $4M.  With generous sharing Hope pledges to date of more than $2.5M, the congregation can move forward with construction this year.  Prioritizing functions within the CENTER will allow certain areas to be completed while others are left unfinished at first.

BIC has been working with project architects from Kane & Johnson to interview leading firms to join the design team in the role of General Contractor. After careful consideration of excellent candidate firms, the outstanding Rochester company Knutson Construction Services has been selected as General Contractor for the CENTER at Autumn Ridge.  Knutson brings deep experience and strong relationships with the Rochester community.

The design team is now studying options to bring more accurate cost estimates for review by BIC and the Elder Board of the church.  On approval of a specific plan, the financial model will be shared with the congregation.

Prayer points:
  • Thanksgiving for excellent professional partners in this project
  • The Lord's blessing of wisdom in design and consultation
  • Clarity of thought in prioritizing functions within the CENTER
  • Eternal impact of Autumn Ridge Church facilities on the lives of people

UPDATE: March 20, 2010 - Staging construction plans and Contractor selection

The outstanding generosity of the Autumn Ridge Church congregation in sharing Hope pledges allows the Building Implementation Committee (BIC) to now turn focus on the design of a staged construction plan for the CENTER at Autumn Ridge.  The full project will ultimately include recreation, gathering and education spaces.  BIC and the project architects are working with the the Autumn Ridge Church staff and board to approve a staged plan that will involve design of the full facility, with construction in stages.

The lobby space and large multi-purpose room/double gym will likely be the first priorities.  Classroom and/or service areas could be constructed initially as unfinished shelled spaces to allow completion as resources allow.  This approach has been used very successfully in the middle school and backstage areas of the main building.

Matching vision with budget will allow project design to continue into the summer, with construction possible as soon as late summer.  BIC is interviewing leading firms to identify a general contractor for the project.
Once selected, this professional partner will join Kane & Johnson Architects as key players in planning (design and estimation), bidding, and construction management.

UPDATE: March 6, 2010

As the congregation engages in the exciting sharing Hope initiative, the Building Implementation Committee (BIC) continues to work behind the scenes. Favorable architectural and construction pricing can be realized by moving forward promptly. Recent focus has been on two important topics.

The first topic involves studying options for the flooring material in the main multi-purpose room.  This large space is designed to accommodate two high school basketball courts or four volleyball courts, or countless other functions including gatherings, meals, fairs, performances, large group sessions, and combinations of all these activities.  This diversity of functions call for durable, attractive and low-maintenance flooring consistent with athletic, recreational, and casual uses.  The BIC is committed to making the flooring selection both functional and a design feature of the CENTER. In many ways, the flooring selection parallels the crucial decision on seating made during design of the current sanctuary.

The second BIC focus over the coming weeks is the process for selection of a general contracting firm to serve as a partner in construction of the CENTER.  Invitations and interviews will be involved, similar to the procedure adopted for construction of phase one of the Salem Road campus.

As the pledge total from the sharing Hope initiative becomes available after March 20, preparation of detailed blueprints will then become the focus.

Architectural design could be complete as soon as July, with the opportunity to begin construction at the CENTER by early fall.

Ideas and comments are always welcome by email to center[at]autumnridgechurch.org

Prayer points.
  • Please pray for God¹s direction and congregational generosity in the sharing Hope initiative.
  • Please pray for wisdom and excellent communication between the BIC, representatives of Autumn Ridge Church ministry functions, and our architects.
  • Please pray for wisdom in the identification of the general contractor for the project.

UPDATE: February 27, 2010

As the congregation engages in the exciting Sharing Hope initiative, the Building Implementation Committee (BIC) continues to work behind the scenes.  Favorable architectural and construction pricing can be realized by moving forward promptly.   The BIC is enjoying weekly meetings with lead architects from Kane and Johnson (KJA) to finalize schematic design and explore details.

These studies include refining plans for the CENTER at Autumn Ridge, and studying options for flooring materials, structural design, and windows.  The BIC will be implementing a negotiated contract model with a general contractor.  When identified through an interview process, this firm will partner with the BIC and the architects to deliver construction solutions and optimal cost estimates.  The general contractor will later participate in the process of evaluating subcontractor bids.

As the pledge total from the Sharing Hope initiative becomes available March 20, preparation of detailed blueprints will then become the focus.  Architectural design could be complete as soon as July, with the opportunity to begin construction at the CENTER by early fall.

Prayer points.
  • Please pray for God’s direction and congregational generosity in the Sharing Hope initiative.
  • Please pray for continued wisdom and excellent communication between the BIC and the architectural partners.
  • Please pray for wisdom in the identification of the general contractor for the project.

UPDATE: February 20, 2010

With congregational approval of the Sharing Hope initiative and designation of funds for advance design planning, these have been busy weeks for the Building Implementation Committee (BIC).  Favorable architectural and construction pricing can be realized by moving forward promptly.   The strategy involves identification of an architectural partner, then a general contractor.  The BIC mailed a request for proposals to leading architectural firms.  From responding firms, three leading candidates were selected for interview.  Based on criteria including experience, competence, professionalism, proximity, and price, Kane and Johnson Architects Inc. (KJ) has been selected as the architect partner for the CENTER at Autumn Ridge.

The KJ team is located in Rochester, has deep experience with similar projects, and brings warm and successful past working relationships with Autumn Ridge.  This team was responsible for architectural design of the Timothy Chapel, and for structural engineering of the entire initial phase of the Salem Rd. campus.  KJ has also served as architect for Schaeffer Academy and many other successful projects.

The Building Implementation Committee will be working with KJ architects over the coming weeks to confirm project cost estimates and review the conceptual design.  As the pledge total from the Sharing Hope initiative becomes available March 20, preparation of detailed blueprints will become the focus.

Prayer points.
  • Please pray for God’s direction and congregational generosity in the Sharing Hope  initiative.
  • Please pray for wisdom for the BIC and the architectural team in planning for the CENTER at Autumn Ridge.
