The weekend of our annual meeting is a time to "pay careful attention" to what God is doing at Autumn Ridge. The writer of Hebrews helps us to apply the grand truth that Jesus is our glorious Christ to our own fellowship.

Hebrews was written to a group of first century Christians who were in danger of giving up. The author points them to Christ as the source of all strength, hope and joy. He wants them to see that Jesus is unique. There is no one like him. Jesus is even superior to the angels that his readers admired so much.

Today we start a new series on Hebrews. This will feed our souls until June. Whenever I tackle a passage of scripture I follow the example of John Owen, one of the great English Puritans who was the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University. He would write out questions that he wanted to ask the text. Here are some of my questions.

Each January we have a Week of Prayer at Autumn Ridge. This is certainly not the only time we pray, but we have found that if we begin the year in prayer it is easier to continue in prayer. We know that nothing worthwhile can happen at Autumn Ridge without God’s blessing, guidance and anointing. Let’s daily yearn for the filling of the Spirit so that we will all be sensitive to the whispers of God. John Bunyan reminds us that, “Prayer is a shield to the soul, a sacrifice to God, and scourge to Satan.” In this passage, God gives the Prophet Jeremiah some wonderful encouragement to pray.
Sunday, January 1, 2012
On the seventh day of creation God rested. It must have been hard work to create the entire universe, so God deserves a good rest. But as Christians, the God that we worship is limitless. He didn’t need to rest, but he chose to rest. Later God called this rest Sabbath and he gave humanity guidelines for what Sabbath is supposed to be. Over the centuries our idea of Sabbath has been altered. Today we will explore God’s reason for giving us the gift of Sabbath rest and how we can make it real for our own lives.

The story of the shepherds is the encounter of men and angels and the meeting of heaven and earth. It is both terrifying and joyful. Meditate on it for just a moment and you will find food for your soul. Of the many tasty morsels, here are three that nourished me.

Romans 1:18-25
This important question is essentially asking, “Is God moral?” This issue is so critical to the Christian gospel that theologians and philosophers have devoted a huge amount of time and energy to finding an answer.
Sunday, November 13, 2011
Being a Christian involves both a personal and transforming relationship with God and a public and transforming relationship with the world. God wants each of us to change our world by caring for disadvantaged and powerless people. When we love our neighbor as ourselves we experience the complete life and deep joy that Jesus offers us. A number of practical opportunities to care for the needy in Rochester and around the world are described.

When you walk into a Christian book store to buy a Bible the selection can be overwhelming. Thousands of hours and dollars have been invested into giving English speakers the very best materials to study God’s Word. But around the world the Bible has yet to be translated into over 2000 languages. As Christians we believe that God still speaks today through the pages of Scripture. How can we be a part of spreading God’s message through Bible translation?

The Christian faith is challenging, so it raises lots of questions. We must never be afraid of these. God wants us to worship him with our whole mind. In the gospels, Jesus welcomes honest inquiry. Each stage of Christian growth brings new queries. Over the years I have been asked hundreds if not thousands of questions. In this new series we are going to address four of the most popular. We begin by looking at how the Apostle John answers, “How do I know I am really saved??
Sunday, October 16, 2011
The church of Jerusalem was a generous community. Their generosity was a practical expression of their love for God and one another. It explains why the Lord “added to their number daily those who were being saved.”

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25
We need each other. We cannot make it on our own. Discipleship is a commitment to connect in an authentic intentional spiritual relationship with another. God calls us to get together regularly to encourage and to motivate each other to live vibrant lives of service and faith. With us being one day closer to the day of Jesus' return and our ultimate victory on the horizon, we should be motivated even more to help and to encourage each other. It is vital that we are connected and have a sense of belonging to the Body of Christ..
Sunday, October 9, 2011
There are few things more delightful than Christian unity and few things more difficult to achieve. Today we will examine why this is so and seek to find ways that our unity as Christians on earth can mirror the unity that is enjoyed by the Father, the Son, and the Spirit in heaven.
Sunday, October 2, 2011
Jesus saved us that we might serve him. God places us into a community so we can use our gifts of service. Service is significant because it brings joy to God, satisfaction to others and is the only earthly activity that will last forever.
Sunday, September 25, 2011
Community is one of the vital values of Autumn Ridge. We want everyone to belong because God wants everyone to belong. In this series we are examining what it means to belong to the community of the faith. Peter tells us, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” Today we look at the nature of this hope that we are to share with others.
Sunday, September 18, 2011
We have chosen the Grand Opening of The Center to launch a new series on community. We long for The Center to be a place where thousands of people find friendship with God and with others. Today we reflect on why God’s people are called to live differently.
Sunday, September 11, 2011
During our series we have seen that God created marriage between a man and a woman to be a wonderfully intimate, lifelong friendship that is to be a picture of Christ’s passion for his church. Yet we all know that ideal does not always work out in the real world made up of fallen men and women. Far too often our marriages bring pain rather than pleasure. Today we will look at what Scripture has to say to these hurting marriages.
Sunday, September 4, 2011
Have you ever wondered what Adam and Eve’s first fight was like? Since humanity’s fall into sin, conflict has been a problem. Conflict is a part of life. As people we disagree, we hurt one another, and we work at coming to resolution together. There is no greater potential for conflict to cause harm than within the covenant bond of marriage. Marriages can be destroyed if we allow sin to poison the way we approach conflict. But when we learn to fight fair and learn to place conflict under the reign of Jesus Christ, grace may abound. The way we resolve conflict as husbands and wives can lead to greater intimacy with one another in marriage.
Sunday, August 28, 2011
It has been said that we think more about sex than any other subject. That is understandable, for none of us would be here without it. So we are not surprised then that God has much to say about sex and the vital role it plays in a happy, loving marriage.
Parents, please use discretion before allowing children to listen to this message.
Sunday, August 21, 2011
The Apostle Paul urges us to “follow the way of love.” He tells us how in one of the great chapters of the Bible that describes the value, the virtue, and the victory of holy love. Every marriage starts with love and our hope is that our love will grow. Paul shows us how this is possible.

Any team will be more effective when the players know their positions and understand their roles. A team unable to work together is doomed to defeat. Marriage is a team effort and it is essential we know our roles. Today we look at two passages of scripture that provide the global perspective and the family perspective on our roles in marriage.
Sunday, August 7, 2011
There have been numerous studies showing the benefits of having a good marriage. We see the benefits from a healthier life emotionally, physically and spiritually to creating better communities and healthier children. King Solomon lays out three benefits to a good marriage in today’s scripture passage. Once again, our purpose in life is to glorify God and grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. These three areas will help us in our pursuit of this purpose and also in giving us the marriages God designed for us.
Sunday, July 31, 2011
Genesis 2 records the creation of Adam and Eve, describing the work God gave them to do and the purpose of their marriage. When we choose to reflect the love of God to one another, a glimpse of Eden’s perfection can be seen in our relationships.
Sunday, July 24, 2011
Our summer of love continues with a new series on marriage. The good news is that God wants our marriages to be great. Please pray that during this series marriages will be strengthened and family life become more joyful.

The mission of Autumn Ridge is Loving God and Serving People. Loving God can be a rather nebulous concept so in this final chapter of his letter John tells us exactly what it means for us to love God.
Sunday, July 10, 2011
John loves the word “know”. He uses it 33 times in his first letter. In this fourth chapter he longs for us to know the truth and have assurance that we are loved by God and belong to him. This is incredibly helpful and a practical chapter because it answers three vital questions.
Sunday, July 3, 2011
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
I John 4:7-8

Sunday, June 19, 2011
In the previous sermon, we learned that Apostle John was reminding the people of the importance of walking in the light verses being fooled into believing the teaching of the Gnostics. This week he challenges that the best defense against the attack of false knowledge is truth. John wanted them to remember what Jesus Christ has done for them and that they are children of God.

“God is light.” 1 John 1:5. What does this verse mean? Why does John utilize this particular metaphor? How does the comparison of light and darkness help us to understand God’s relationship to humankind? These are just a few of the questions that beg answers.
1 John is a book about love, but not just any love. Perfect love. God’s love. Our response of love to God. As we begin a new sermon series called The Summer of Love today we will gain from John’s perspective of Loving the Light. John asks the timeless question: Is love the most important value? God invites us to wrestle with his truth in a way that not only clarifies our doctrinal teaching, but also captures our hearts and defines our lives.

God does everthing for the purpose of revealing the magnificence of his glory. It is easy to see this purpose in creation, Christ's resurrection, or the new heaven and earth. But what is God's purpose in creating hell? It is because Christians have been unable to answer that adequately that we avoid the subject of hell. Today we will seek to discern the purpose of eternal punishment.
.
Sunday, May 29, 2011
The subject of hell is in the news. Rob Bell's book, Love Wins, has Christians discussing whether there is such a place as hell.

You probably know what you are doing next week, but what will you be doing in 100 years time? If you are a Christian, you will be in heaven. Life will be filled with thrilling and fulfilling opportunities.

Today we are here to recognize the group of almost 200 students and adults from our very own Student Ministries who are heeding this call this summer. They are heeding the call to bring broken and hurting people to The King, Jesus Christ who Himself left His heavenly position of royalty to bind up the brokenhearted and to set the captive free.

The resurrection of Jesus on Easter Day makes it possible for us to go to heaven, so we are starting a five week series on Heaven and Hell. Today we will consider four important questions.
.
Sunday, April 24, 2011
“I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection
and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like
him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the
resurrection from the dead.” Philippians 3:10-11
In the resurrection of Jesus, we hear God speaking louder than at any other time in history. What he says tells us profound truths about himself, ourselves, and our world.
.
There was no sermon on April 16-17. This was the presentation of the Easter musical, The Choice.

One of the most delightful pictures of the cross is summed up in the Latin phrase, “Christus Victor,” which speaks of the victorious Christ. It is a lovely idea but is it true? The cross didn’t look like a victory at the time, and as we look around the world today not much has changed. Christians often feel more like losers than winners. The Colossians faced this challenge, so Paul explains how the cross provides a victory which impacts all of life.
.
Sunday, April 3, 2011
Paul wrote the book of Galatians to a group of young converts who were struggling to understand the significance of the cross and its impact on their daily lives. Not only did they have to deal externally with the influences of living in a pagan, pre-Christian culture, but they were being heavily influenced internally by false teachers who believed salvation was a mix of God’s grace coupled with the human effort of obeying Old Testament Law. Paul wrote to remind them that the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross was all-sufficient, both for their salvation and the daily living out of their faith.
.
Sunday, March 27, 2011
Today we start a short series on The Cross of Christ. There are three good reasons for doing this.
First, IT IS LENT
This is the period leading up to Good Friday and Easter when we reflect on the meaning of the cross.
Second, IT IS THE THEME OF THE GOSPELS
All four gospels devote more space to the crucifixion than any other event in the life of Jesus.
Third, IT IS THE PREACHING OF THE APOSTLES
They are constantly speaking about the cross.
Paul never mentions Christmas once in his preaching or his writing. It is the cross that is central.
No matter what the problem facing the New Testament church it appears that the answer is always the cross.
Sunday, March 20, 2011
The book of 2 Timothy is Paul’s last letter before his execution so it shares his most important thoughts. We learn in this passage about the book shared with little Timothy by his grandmother Lois and his mother, Eunice. It was received by Timothy in his infancy. We see here the importance of sharing the best of books with our children. Scripture was greatly valued by Paul and in his final moments of life, he shares with us and encourages us to share it with others.

Peter is writing to suffering Christians. They are being persecuted because of their love for Jesus. They have been forced to leave their homes and are scattered throughout Asia Minor. When you have lost everything it is hard to be happy, yet Peter insists that they, “Greatly rejoice.” How is this possible? We want to know – for suffering is universal. We all experience it. The answer is found in the best of books, which we treasure all the more in times of turmoil.

Known as The Apocalypse, the Book of Revelation is John’s account of what the Lord’s messenger revealed to him. It is a challenging book to interpret because we often get bogged down with questions of future prophecy, but the primary purpose of the Bible is to reveal God’s message for spiritual relationship with himself. John had a message to the seven churches of Asia Minor (modern day Turkey) that still speaks to us today. Revelation is the only book of the Bible to begin in this unique fashion of multiple letters to various recipients. Today we will explore these Biblical truths from one of the more challenging parts of God’s word.
Sunday, February 27, 2011
After reading through the Bible, some people comment that the Old Testament is very different from the new. One heretic of the past even suggested they had been written by two different gods! As Christians we believe that all Scripture is inspired by God. Yet we sometimes have difficulty connecting law and grace. For example, what is the role of Old Testament law in the life of a New Testament Christian? We find the answer in the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus begins by assuring us that he has not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. He then takes six areas of Old Testament law and demonstrates how they are fulfilled in him.
Sunday, February 20, 2011
The Bible is sometimes hard to understand. We can identify with the Ethiopian’s comment to Philip when he said, “How can I understand what I am reading unless someone explains it to me?” The encouraging message of this splendid story is that God wants us to understand his word. He will go to great lengths to ensure that someone can explain his truth to us. This passage has much to say to us about evangelism, obedience and even baptism, but primarily it tells us about God.
Sunday, February 13, 2011
History is filled with disastrous stories of people who misunderstood the message of Scripture. They include the followers of Jim Jones who drank the Kool-Aid in Guyana, and the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas. One of the reasons why there are thousands of denominations in the world is because people have come to different conclusions about what the Bible says. Interpreting Scripture properly is essential if we are to understand the full truth of God's Word. In this passage, Jesus interprets part of Isaiah 61.
Sunday, February 6, 2011
Have you ever wondered why we need the Bible or how the Bible came to be? The incident in Jeremiah’s life described in this chapter shows how the prophecy of Jeremiah came into existence. It illustrates how we got the other 65 books of the Bible and why they are necessary today.
Sunday, January 30, 2011
What do you do at the completion of a building project? That was the challenge facing Nehemiah after the walls of Jerusalem had been rebuilt, and it is the challenge facing us once the CENTER is completed later this year. This eighth chapter of Nehemiah provides a biblical answer. On this Future Directions Weekend it also reminds us why we do what we do at Autumn Ridge.
Sunday, January 23, 2011
Last week we saw Israel receiving The Book of the Covenant. In their excitement they promised to obey it. Sadly their enthusiasm waned and the book was neglected and eventually lost. In our passage today we see the difference the Bible makes, both by its absence and its presence, when King Josiah finds the Book of the Law in the rubble of the temple and reintroduces it back into the life of Judah.
Sunday, January 16, 2011
John Bunyan referred to the Bible as The Best of Books. In this new series we are going to look at what the Bible says about the Bible. We begin with the story of Moses receiving the book of the law. We notice what happened at this significant time in salvation history. It imparts important truths about God and his word.
Sunday, January 9, 2011
John Bunyan called the Bible “The Best of Books.” Today we start a new series examining how Scripture has changed the lives of individuals and nations. Four hundred years ago the King James Version of the Bible was published. This translation of God’s word has had a greater impact than any other book in history, so it is appropriate we commemorate this milestone.

We begin the New Year by spending a week in prayer. Our theme is Waiting on the Lord. Few, if any, of us enjoy waiting, so it may be surprising that God regularly commands his people to wait on him. Today we will explore what this means. I hope it will result in one of the most spiritually strengthening prayer weeks we have ever had.
Friday, December 31, 2010
As we approach a New Year one of the favorite ways to remember the year gone by is to look back at a year-in-review. There are a myriad of approaches that we could take. I’ve decided to look back at 2010 through the lens of news headlines. The past year has been filled with bizarre stories, stories of scandals, and stories of hopelessness. As we review our past year, we realize that the world we live in is not too far from a world where God told his prophet to go marry a prostitute.
Sunday, December 26, 2010
Heading into the New Year we want to be very careful we don’t bring too much baggage. It is important we don’t make life so complicated, but we need to keep it simple. Therefore, we need to be clear in identifying the simple things we bring into the New Year. With that said, the most important thing we bring is the certainty of our faith.
As we look at the life of the Apostle Peter and his encounters with Jesus, we understand that through the high and low experiences of life’s journey we come to a simple faith in God. The “simple” piece of the story is the question that Jesus asks and our response to it... Who do you say that I am?
